ANOTHER MANIPULATION? Vulin’s Suggestion for Serbia to Join BRICS

An opposition lawyer in Belgrade posted on his online profile that another manipulation is in the works, following the suggestion made by Aleksandar Vulin, the director of Serbia’s civilian intelligence agency, BIA (Bezbednosna Informativna Agencija), or more precisely, by two (former) members of his party, that Serbia should join BRICS. The proposal was officially submitted to the Serbian parliament and its president yesterday (August 28th).

Outlining the situation

The proposal was put forward by Bojan Torbica and Đorđe Komlenski, both representatives of the Socialist Movement previously led by Aleksandar Vulin himself. The proposal was addressed to the very progressive parliamentary speaker, Vladimir Orlić.

The self-proclaimed Russian-friendly nationalist party was founded by Vulin in 2008 and led until December 2022. However, after his appointment as the head of the Security Information Agency, he resigned from the party presidency and froze his membership in the party.

This does not necessarily mean that he lost his influence or diminished his appetite for manipulation, at least according to Čedomir Stojković, an opposition lawyer who previously filed a complaint against Vulin for promoting the expansion of the Wagner Group in Serbia, in collaboration with the Russian ambassador.

As the head of BIA, Vulin cannot submit a proposal to the Serbian parliament president personally, but he could mobilize both parliamentary representatives of the Socialist Movement, as they do not have more in the 250-member Skupština.

Cyril Ramaphosa, the South African president, announced last Thursday (August 24th) that Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates will also be invited to join BRICS, which could provide a good opportunity for submitting a Serbian accession proposal.

By the way, Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, did not dare to attend the summit of the organization that has so far brought together Russia, China, Brazil, South Africa, and India because the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against him for deporting Ukrainian children to Russia. Therefore, Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, represented Moscow at the BRICS summit.

Manipulation, i.e., a complete scam

According to the aforementioned lawyer, the resolution proposal for Serbian BRICS membership was actually agreed upon by Aleksandar Vučić and Aleksandar Vulin with the goal of creating the impression in the eyes of the West that the Serbian president is as pro-Western a leader as circumstances allow.

Stojković emphasized that they want to deceive the West with this, but the West must know that Aleksandar Vulin does nothing without Aleksandar Vučić.

The proposal should create the impression that Vučić looks like “he represents the more moderate alternative” compared to Vulin.

However, Stojković noted that there is no more extreme or moderate option, as Aleksandar Vučić is Putin’s man, who “personally created a pro-Russian sentiment in Serbia” and was personally the host of Russian propaganda and politics in Belgrade.

According to the opposition lawyer, the parliament under Vučić’s control will ignore the resolution proposal, and Aleksandar Vučić will broadcast the message to the West through satellites, i.e., Serbian television, that “look, I’m not Putin’s man.”

Stojković believes that in the meantime, everything else will remain unchanged in Serbia, especially when it comes to recruiting for Putin’s army.

The Belgrade lawyer believes that the only correct response from the West can be to not respond substantially to the initiative other than conveying to Aleksandar Vučić, the Serbian president, during personal conversations that “they will certainly not stop Serbia if it chooses the path towards BRICS and Ethiopia.”
